PEAK TO PEAK GONDOLA TO UNITE WHISTLER AND BLACKCOMB AT THE TOP
Record breaking lift will revolutionize resort experience
WHISTLER, BC, April 17, 2007 - Whistler Blackcomb, a mountain resort already renowned for daring innovation, has announced its boldest move yet with the construction of the Peak to Peak Gondola, for completion December 2008. The two mountains will be united by a gondola that will set world records for length and height while providing an unmatched experience for winter and summer resort guests.
The Peak to Peak Gondola will travel 4.4 kilometres in just 11 minutes, transporting winter and summer guests from Whistler's Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain, giving them unprecedented access to both mountains' expansive and unique high alpine terrain and spectacular vistas.
"The Peak to Peak Gondola will create a dramatically enhanced experience that no other mountain resort in North America, possibly the world, can offer," says Dave Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb's Chief Operating Officer. "This link will effectively double, or more, the options for accessing the highest quality and greatest variety of terrain on any one day, from anywhere on the mountains. We are going to completely revolutionize our guests' experience."
Skiers and riders will have the opportunity to easily take advantage of 8,171 acres of terrain encompassed by both incredible mountains, via the world's longest continuous lift system. Moving freely between the high alpine areas of both mountains skiers and riders will spend more of their day in the best weather and snow conditions. The adventure for summer visitors will include spectacular views of glaciers and peaks as well as access to an expanded hiking trail network on both mountains.
"This lift is the catalyst for a sustainable economic future benefiting both Whistler Blackcomb and the entire resort community," says Brownlie. "It will solidify Whistler's position as the undeniable leader of mountain resorts in North America, while increasing our appeal as a top destination in the world."
With 28 sky cabins each holding up to 28 people, total capacity will be 4,100 passengers per hour. The Peak to Peak terminal on Whistler Mountain will be located next to the Roundhouse Lodge and easily accessed from the valley by the Village Gondola. On Blackcomb Mountain the Peak to Peak terminal will be located next to the Rendezvous Lodge and accessed from the valley via the Wizard Express and Solar Coaster Express.
Construction will commence in May 2007, with the lift being manufactured and installed by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group (Doppelmayr) of Austria The Doppelmayr 3S tri cable gondola will span 4.4 kilometres (2.73 miles) in total distance from Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain with the world's longest unsupported (free) span of 3.024 kilometres (1.88 miles) between the two towers furthest apart. The highest vertical point is over Fitzsimmons Creek at 415 metres (1,361 feet) - the world's greatest distance above a valley floor.

"In the Spirit", "Where is Joe" und "Bark Sandwich" sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen!
The ski resort Whistler Resort consists of two mountains, Whister and Blackcomb. From the Whistler Village base station you can float either with the Excalibur eight person gondola to the Blackcomb Mountain, or with the ten person gondola up Whistler Mountain. Since the season 1999/2000 two new high speed quads, one with bubble, lead the gondula parallel to the Whistler Mountain to reduce waiting times during high peak seasons. At the Whistler Mountain the beginners will prefer the Emerald Express Quad or the Harmony Express Quad, where they can ski or ride on tree-free, easy to intermediate slopes. The experts will take the "The Peak" high speed quad up to the top of Whistler Mountain, where you can find double diamond runs and the back bowls. Very recommendable are also the slopes down to the mountain station of the Creekside gondola and down to the valley station at Whistler Creekside. A modern six person gondola takes you from Creekside back in the skiing area. After the gondola you can take the high speed quad Red Chair up to the Whistler Mountain again. Very recommendable are also the "Gladed Runs", this are marked but not groomed slopes through the forest. At Whistler Mountain try "Side Order", "Club 21" and "In Deep". At Blackcomb Mountain you have one douzen such "Gladed Runs". The "Outer Limits" is the steepest, but do not miss "In the Spirit", "Where is Joe" and "Bark Sandwich"! Now we want to report about the Blackcomb Mountain, too. From the Whistler Village, as already mentioned, you can use the Excalibur Gondola up to the middle station of Blackcomb Mountain. From there the Excelerator Express Quad takes you up to the Glacier Creek, where you have to decide now whether you want to go up to the glacier directly with the Glacier Express Quad, or with the Jersey Cream Express to the Rendezvous Christine's and then along a flat way to the 7th Heaven Express Quad and with this lift up to the glacier. On the Horstman Glacier you will find two short t-bars. This lifts are open every year until August. From the mountain station of the Snowcase t-bar, after a short ascent, you can ski down on the Blackcomb Glacier. (note: this run is nothing for beginner) This run leads past the Excelerator Express again and then down to Whistler Village. If you use always the right slopes you come down to the Chateau Whistler Resort, one of the best hotels in Whistler. From there one can float also with the Wizard Express, a high speed quad with bubbles, directly from the hotel, up to the skiing area. After the skiing you can meet with with friends in one of the bars and restaurants in Whistler to have a beer... Whistler is a very nice village, the resort offers very modern and fast lifts, well groomed and long runs, for beginners and advanced skiers and riders and steep Back Bowls, that´s why we voted Whistler to one of the TOP-Resorts 1999/2000 and TOP-Resorts 2001/2002.
